Procedures for Instruction
Effective procedures for faculty instruction are made according to CHED Policies. The Curriculum Development Procedure (PM-PSU-03-AA-02) is used as a standard for curriculum creation and curriculum development. Faculty evaluation and class observation is done during the semester in order to monitor the faculty. Finally, the creation of syllabi, table of specifications, examinations, and instructional materials are pursued in the form of course packages.
Curriculum Development and Enrichment
Curriculum Development is a priority activity in the University which ensures that the courses are not only relevant but also compliant to the new CHED Policies, Standards & Guidelines (PSGs). The Curriculum Development Procedure (PM-PSU-03-AA-02) covers the development and review of existing and new curriculum, assessment of compliant and non-compliant courses, drafting, evaluation, approval, and monitoring of the curriculum.
The Department of Information Technology of Pangasinan State University – Urdaneta City Campus continues to forge ahead of the borderless world as it conducts Curriculum Review and Enrichment. Following the established procedures on curriculum revision and enhancement, consultations and planning of the BS IT curriculum revision and enhancement were conducted starting in 2017 involving various stakeholders such as industry representatives, alumni, and students. Curriculum amalgamation in 2018 was also conducted on all PSU campuses offering the BS IT program, where the PSU-Urdaneta City Campus was selected as the lead campus. The updated curriculum was submitted to the Commission on Higher Education for contents notation.
Responding to the changes, even with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University initiated another University-wide curriculum enrichment in 2021 which included the BS IT curriculum. The Urdaneta City Campus again served as the lead campus on the BS IT curriculum revision and enrichment since the college dean of the IT department is a member of the Regional Quality Assessment Team. The enhanced curriculum was presented to the Commission on Higher Education for contents notation.
Faculty Evaluation and Class Observation
The Information Technology Department of Pangasinan State University – Urdaneta City Campus continuously conducts faculty evaluation and class observation to assess faculty teaching effectiveness and to facilitate faculty growth and development. Measuring the effectiveness of faculty members is done based on the student evaluation of faculty and class observation of the department chairperson.
Faculty is being evaluated by students in four areas such as commitment, knowledge of subject, teaching for independent learning, and management of learning. Students are also asked to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their instructors. This is being done using a printed evaluation form or the student portal.
Class observation is being done by the chairperson to ensure regular class attendance and adherence to the approved class schedule. Class observation helps the observer assess the performance of the faculty and see if there is a need for peer coaching and mentoring. Before the observation must be done, faculty members need to add their department chairperson and college dean to all the teams created in the Learning Management System called Microsoft Teams.
Creation of Syllabus, Table of Specifications, Examinations, and Instructional Materials
Every time classes start, each of the faculty members of the Information Technology Department of Pangasinan State University – Urdaneta City Campus is tasked to prepare course packages. Course packages may include course syllabi, table of specifications, examinations, and instructional materials to assist students in managing their study time and maximizing their learning. Furthermore, faculty members are expected to provide mechanisms to inform and orient learners on the learning system to be implemented, which may be in a form of course packages for students that are accessible through off-line and online modes.
A syllabus is a requisite document for teaching in that it serves to outline the basic elements of a course. Faculty members are expected to prepare and submit updated syllabi five (5) days after the commencement of classes. The syllabi are then to be evaluated using the syllabi checklist. Once approved, these will be signed by the Department Chair, College Dean, and the Campus Executive Director and submitted to the Department Chair for filing.
Table of specification (TOS) is a tool used to describe test items in terms of the content and the process dimensions. It is a blueprint or plan prepared by an instructor to serve as his/her basis for the test construction. Faculty members are expected to submit TOS three (3) days before the examination schedule. Also, the actual examination papers need to be attached with the TOS.
Instructional materials have been observed as a powerful strategy to bring about effective teaching and learning. The importance of quality and adequate instructional materials in teaching and learning can occur through their effective utilization during classroom teaching. Instructional materials here include all the tools that the teachers can use to make the learning more interesting and memorable at the end of every semester, instructional materials are expected to be created. These materials will then be checked, evaluated, and copyrighted. These materials will be utilized to deliver quality teaching, which can have positive effect on students’ learning and academic performance.
