On-the-Job Trainings

On the job training plays a very important role for students’ development. This is where they fully apply theories and principles to actual work. Here, they discover and acquire technique in different technological skills. They also develop their decision making towards work.

Prior to deployment of On-the-Job Trainees, the OJT Coordinator issue a letter of request duly approved by the CED to the cooperating agencies where they will be deployed. A Memorandum of Agreement will be contracted between the two parties (PSU and the Agency) upon acceptance of the OJT. The request in turn should be duly signed by the head of the agency or a representative upon acceptance to the OJT.

The OJT coordinator conducts send-off seminar to the OJTs before the deployment to orient them on the objectives and background of the program, proper behavior and attitudes, duties and responsibilities and other concerns while in the workplace.

The administration is aware with such an importance that leads them to pursue different endeavors towards providing the students with agencies suited for their major fields.

The Student Internship Program, being academic in nature and one of the academic requirements to get a degree, is under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. As an integral unit of the University, the office of the Director for Internship supervises the employment of CHED guidelines on student internship both local and international. The Director for Internship determines the target HTE through Campus Internship Coordinators and Internship/Practicum Instructors through MOAs/MOUs and/or Internship Agreements integrating training needs and objectives of internship. Campus Internship Coordinator/Practicum Instructors gather feedback from HTEs and do random site visit on a regular basis manual and discussed by the Campus Internship Coordinator during PreInternship Seminar. In this regard, student-interns are assessed by the internship –subject instructors, program coordinators and campus registrars in terms of their academic standing and other qualifications that would make them eligible/qualified for deployment.

A list of Partner Industries and list of Student-trainees are also prepared by degree program to determine the efficacy of student-trainees’ distribution. The master list is useful in maintaining industry linkages.

For student interns to be accepted in their host training establishment/Cooperating School, they are endorsed by the internship/practicum subject instructor/practice teaching coordinator stating the needed competencies to be acquired by them.

Prior to the deployment, a pre-internship seminar is conducted/ organized by the Campus Internship Coordinator and Practicum/Internship to orient the students and their parents on the University’s policies on internship program and the system for deployment as contained in the process manual of student internship operations.

To validate the extent of quality of training delivered by the partner agencies, practicum/subject instructor conducts on-site monitoring/visitation. The Internship Director holds meetings on a regular basis with the Campus Internship Coordinator and likewise, Campus Internship Coordinators conducts meeting with the internship/practicum subject instructors to assure the student interns’ well-executed training experience and to give them an opportunity to discuss problems they encounter in their internship.

Aside from the monthly meeting, an oral presentation on their narrative report on the students’ internship is regularly done as part of their culminating activity (post-Internship and exit conference). This is done by program specialization and is attended by the internship – subject instructor, Campus OJT Coordinator, Campus Executive Director, Student-interns, and incoming student interns. This is aimed to share the best practices they experienced and the problems they encountered during the period. Sharing these could give other interns how these problems are solved and how they could sustain or adopt the best practices when they will be in their field. Partner industries/agencies also conduct evaluation of the interns as a component of the student interns’ final rating. The OJT students of BS Information Technology program program were deployed to different cooperating agencies.
